Missionary Slide Shows…

"I want to tell you a story about Joe. He's the little boy on the left... the one looking at the camera... can you see him?"

"I want to tell you a story about Joe. He's the little boy on the right... the one looking at the camera... can you see him?"

Bring a missionary with a compelling story into my church for a presentation and I am almost instantly reduced to a blubbering wad of tears and snot… It doesn’t matter if they have slides or media or authentic costumes… I am drawn into the stories.

I am the exception… not the rule.

Most people, especially in the US, are over-stimulated by media.  So, if the presentation is dull or too long or not visually engaging, they check out about 45 seconds into it.  And we’ve all seen that mission trip picture: underexposed foreground that makes the 4 African children playing in the street 100 feet away look like tiny, black specks.

Take a quick look and go back to text-messaging your girlfriend… and totally miss the amazing story of Joe (third speck from the left) and how he came in dying from malnutrition and malaria three years ago…

Great stories + lousy media = boring presentation.

So, in the minds of church-goers there are basically 2 types of missionaries: interesting and boring.  The interesting ones raise lots of money and the boring ones struggle to get the support they need to make ends meet.

Ironically, the interesting ones often get the support of a couple of rock bands who end up raising money for them so that they can keep doing the work of their ministry… But the boring ones tend to spend a third of their time going from church to church asking for support which comes in the form of pathetic, little love-offerings.

The sad thing is that the boring ones almost always have a great story to tell.  They just need a little help in telling it.

And that’s where we come in…

We’re artists:  photographers, graphic artists, media designers, filmmakers, songwriters, indie bands… The visual and emotional flash that these missionaries need to engage their audiences, hold their attention and get help for Joe and other kids like him… it’s just a “doodle” for us.  Seriously, a day of pro-bono work from you could make the difference for a ministry that provides food for street children in India or an orphanage in Uganda.

Featured Artist: Kathie Luther

Rise Up On Eagle's Wings by Kathie Luther
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength… they shall rise up on eagle’s wings.” -Isaiah 40:31

I had the pleasure last week of chatting with our featured artist, Kathie Luther.

Kathie is a mixed-media artist up in northern Michigan, with a broad scope of skill that covers painting, sculpting, textiles and photography.  If you visit her photostream on Flickr.com, you’ll see examples of the many artistic interests and skills that Kathie has honed in her years teaching art to children, teens and adults.

Kathie first discovered a love of art in her high school biology class, where assignments required her to draw specimens.  This, combined with her love of nature, inspired her decision to study biology and art at Northern Michigan University.  She soon chose art as her major area of study and eventually received a degree in art with emphasis in sculpting, casting and pottery.

After college and making time to become a wife and mom, Kathie found herself teaching art in a K-12 Christian school and later began holding classes for children and adults in her home.  As with many gifted teachers, Kathie is also a perennial student and through the years picked up painting, photography and digital media.

Her painting always tended to be inspirational in nature, but began to take on a more prophetic tone about five years ago.  At that time, her themes and imagery began to trend toward symbolism and eschatology (related to the end times).  You see a lot of that in the images that we’ve been featuring on the site.

For the record, I grew up and studied theology in a non-charismatic tradition, so I know that some of you can’t help but raise an eyebrow when I use the word “prophetic,” but what we’re talking about, simply put, is the idea that God still speaks.  It doesn’t seem like a big stretch, in our media driven culture, that He would chose to speak visually.

Kathie told me that she doesn’t have a formula for creating a painting.  Sometimes she wakes up and paints the images from a dream.  Other times, she will trace the shadows created by imperfections on the canvas until an image coalesces.  She has even done some of her painting during worship while the musical people in the room were singing.

And that is the kind of thing we love to hear.

Kathie continues to paint and create works in other media and teaches summer classes in the art center adjacent to her home. She holds summer art shows where she talks to the patrons who visit about the reality of God’s love and the ways that He still speaks. She reminded me of a prayer that King David prayed long ago:

Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
- Psalm 25:4-5

Kathie still prays that prayer.  After talking with her, I do too.

You can check out Kathie’s art on Flickr.  She also has prints, postcards and some original paintings for sale at her eBay store.

Koinonia Is Not Greek For “Pie”…

PieI’ve spent most of my life in church.  I have vivid memories of  going to church when I was five, standing on the pew next to my Poppa and singing, “Power in the Blood” at the top of my lungs.

I remember an old preacher who talked to us one Sunday about a funny word that meant “fellowship.”

Now, I knew all about fellowship… Our church did it a lot.  We even had an entire building dedicated to the pursuit of fellowship:  The Fellowship Hall.  My favorite flavor of fellowship was Pie.  There were ladies in that church that made the best pie that a kid could ask for.

Then the preacher said something that caught my attention and has stayed with me for more than 30 years:

Koinonia is about sharing what we have, about giving of ourselves and about supporting each other… Koinonia is not Greek for “pie.”

Now I have a degree in Bible, have studied Greek and been in the “fellowship” of numerous churches in my travels.  I have experienced, in varying degrees, a measure of koinonia in several of these churches… and I have eaten a LOT of pie.

Today’s story isn’t about pie… It’s about coffee.

Koinonia isn’t Greek for “coffee” either.

I met two friends from church for coffee this evening.  One is an artist who is transitioning from a full-time job to self-employment.  The other is a programmer for websites.  So, a Salesman, a Hippie and a Geek are sitting in Starbucks…

The purpose of the meeting is to help The Artist redesign the form and function of his website.  The Geek was in his element: suggesting solutions and taking detailed notes.  When the techno-speak got too deep, The Artist would get a glazed look and sheepishly ask for an explanation.

To be honest, I felt like the proverbial third-wheel… The Artist is really a top notch talent and The Geek could probably build a space shuttle out of household items.  I offered a mind-numbing lesson on intellectual property and some pointers on branding.

But there was a wonderful peace while I sat with them.  It was as if God had come and blessed the meeting with His presence.

Then it dawned on me.  The three of us had come together so that The Geek and I could lend our peculiar expertise to The Artist.  The Geek was offering functionality to The Artist that would cost thousands of dollars.  He was going the extra mile, not just trying to come up with a solution that would work, but working to come up with the absolute best solution.  The spirit of the meeting was about sharing what we have, about giving of ourselves and about supporting each other…

I hope we can do some of that around here…

It really is better than pie… And I love pie.
